About the Course

This comprehensive, hands-on course is designed for people seeking to develop the skills required to safely handle, assess, rehabilitate, and provide first aid to Tasmania’s venomous snakes.

The training equips participants with the knowledge and practical competency needed to apply to NRE Tasmania for a Special Purposes Wildlife Permit for Herpetofauna. On completion, participants may also be eligible to register as a snake catcher within their local area, subject to permit and regulatory requirements.

The course combines theory and practical application, with a strong focus on safety, animal welfare, and regulatory compliance. Participants will gain confidence working with snakes in rescue, rehabilitation, and release contexts.

Key Topics Covered

  • Snake bite first aid for humans
  • Assessing injured or unwell snakes
  • Providing first aid for common injuries and conditions
  • Rehabilitation principles for injured snakes
  • Safe handling and stress-minimisation techniques
  • Housing and containment requirements during rehabilitation
  • Identification of Tasmanian snake species
  • Capture, restraint, transport, and release methods
  • Correct selection and use of capture equipment
  • Legal responsibilities and permit considerations in Tasmania

This is a hands-on course, and participants will be required to handle live snakes under expert supervision. Long pants and practical, closed footwear are mandatory.

This training is an invaluable opportunity for anyone involved in snake rescue, rehabilitation, or wildlife response to build the skills needed to work confidently, safely, and ethically with Tasmania’s snakes.
